Getting Organised for Competitions

Getting ready for Pony Club competitions doesn’t need to be stressful. A little preparation before the event can make competition days smoother, calmer, and far more enjoyable for both riders and parents.

Whether you’re heading to your first competition or you’ve been to many before, having everything organised ahead of time helps you focus on what really matters — enjoying the day with your horse and your Pony Club friends.

Competition Event Cards – Plan Ahead

All Pony Club competitions require an official PCQ competition event card. This includes:

  • Showjumping

  • Gymkhanas

  • One Day Events

  • Sporting
  • Campdrafting & more

If you do not already have your event cards, you will need to contact Pony Club Queensland at least one week before your competition. Cards can be paid for over the phone and posted to you.

Paperwork on the Day

On competition day, riders are required to present the following paperwork to the event office on arrival:

  • Your Red Event Showjumping Card or Pink Event Equitation Card

  • A completed Horse Health Declaration

These documents are required at every competition, so it’s important to make sure they are ready before you leave home.

Rider Numbers

Rider numbers will be emailed prior to the event and must be:

  • Printed and attached to your horse

  • Clearly visible while competing

Number holders can be purchased from Gympie Saddleworld, which is a great option so you always have them ready for future competitions.

Gear Check

All riders must present for gear check before each round. Make sure you allow plenty of time before your class and remember that gear check must be completed and ticked off before every round you compete in.

What Else to Bring

It’s also important to be prepared for the day itself. Don’t forget:

  • Plenty of water for both rider and horse

  • Sunscreen and a hat

  • Snacks or lunch

  • Horse feed, hay, and shade if needed

Remember – Ask for Help

Competitions can sometimes feel daunting, especially if you’re new, but remember that everyone starts somewhere. Pony Club is all about teamwork, learning, and supporting one another.

If you’re unsure about anything on the day, don’t hesitate to ask for help — club members, officials, and experienced riders are always happy to assist.
